[This is a guest post by Diarmaid Byrne. Diarmaid works as a Chief People Officer at Kuliza. You can read more of his posts at Kuliza’s blog]

Here in this article I would like to cover some of the reasons behind the immense F-commerce buzz and why should your brand be interested in it.

What is Facebook Commerce?

Social commerce refers to the use of social technologies to connect, listen, understand and engage to improve the shopping experience. F-Commerce is a form of social commerce that is executed on or influenced by Facebook. This involves the range of different activities all related to buying and selling products and services with Facebook.

Why are brands on Facebook?

There are three reasons that I see why brands are establishing themselves on Facebook:

1. Customers are already there

This is an obvious reason. Brands need to follow the action and eyeballs, and that is all happening on Facebook. They are already enjoying significant traction:

There are over 600m active users (or about 1 in 11 people), 50% of whom log on to Facebook every day

90% of social network users in the US use Facebook

57.1% of internet users in the US use Facebook

A brand’s Facebook fan is 41% more likely to recommend the company and 28% more likely to continue using them in the future (reference)

The average fan is worth $133.38 and spends $71.84 more per year than a non fan (reference)

Facebook users spend 1.5 times more online that other Internet users (reference)

Facebook customers spend more than double that of non-Facebook customers (reference)

There is a 51% increase in likelihood that a customer will complete a purchase after clicking the ‘like’ button (reference)

2. Biggest brands are investing on F-Commerce

Because people are already spending time on Facebook, brands – and investors – are investing in F-Commerce. Brand adoption is accelerating and those who already have a presence are finding that it is driving their E-Commerce:

Major global brands already sell directly on Facebook

More than 50% of the global top 100 websites have integrated with Facebook using its social plugins

There are 50,000 independent retailers who have opened a Facebook store with Payvment

76% of marketers plan to leverage Facebook for social commerce initiatives (reference)

67% of retailers plan to use Facebook to drive traffic to their E-Commerce sites (reference)

Facebook commerce conversion rates range from 2% to 4% and are on par with E-Commerce websites

3. Shopping is social experience

Shopping is a social experience for most people. Not only do we seek out opinions and feedback before we buy, but we also prefer to shop with friends and family rather than alone. Along with shopping as a social act, people shop not just for themselves but to manage their public image and personal identity, things that can be advertised on Facebook where the average user has 130 friends.

How are brands establishing a presence on Facebook?

There are 2 basic types of approaches that brands are using on Facebook (reference: Social commerce today’s research on F-Commerce):

1. On Facebook F-Commerce

This form of F-Commerce is the purchase of real goods and services inside Facebook. There are 3 types of ways that brands can enable users to purchase on Facebook:

1.a. Facebook Stores

These are E-Commerce enabled Facebook pages that allow users to browse and purchase without leaving Facebook. Two examples of this are Coca-Cola’s store that allows fans to buy merchandise and JCPenny where people can browse and pay for goods without leaving Facebook. On JCPenny’s site users can share, like, and post comment on items on their Facebook wall.

Another example is Delta Airlines Ticket Counter that allows users to book and pay for flights through Facebook (though unfortunately only for flights originating in the US at the moment). Along with Keep Climbing, for their frequent flyers, and Delta Assist, all Delta interactions can be completed through their Facebook page without visiting their website.

1.b. Facebook Credits

This is Facebook’s own exclusive and mandatory currency used for purchases of virtual goods in games and Facebook Deals. They are used for in-game purchases of virtual goods on Zynga games such as Farmville and Cityville. More recently, Warner Bros. allow people to stream movies in Facebook using Facebook Credits.

1.c. Facebook Deals

Launched in April 2011, this service offers deals inside Facebook that are paid for using Facebook Credits. Deals are sourced from local retailers and are displayed on the left-hand navigation column. Users can ‘Like’ or share deals with their friends and publish an update on their News Feed if they buy a deal.

2. Off Facebook F-Commerce

This form of F-Commerce takes advantage of Facebook’s Open Graph, allowing shoppers to sign into Facebook from any online site through a computer, tablet or mobile.

2.a. Facebook-enhanced websites

These are traditional E-Commerce websites that integrate with Facebook to offer instant personalization. The Levi’s Friend Store allows shoppers to use Facebook Connect to see what their friends “Like” and share their favourite Levi’s products.

Amazon allows users to activate their Amazon Facebook Page once they have logged into Amazon. This shows a user’s Facebook photo and profile, birthday notifications and gift suggestions, Amazon items popular among your Facebook friends and recommendations based on your profile data, making it a more personal and social shopping experience.

2.b. Facebook-enhanced retail stores

These are traditional high-street retailers that provide in-store shoppers a Facebook experience. The first brand to experiment with this was Diesel with their Diesel Cam. This gave shoppers the options to take a photo of clothes they try on and then log into Facebook to share the photo with their friends

Macy’s took this idea much further by developing a Magic Fitting Room. This included a full-length interactive, camera-enhanced mirror that allowed shoppers to scroll through clothes on the mirror and virtually try them on by flicking them over your reflection on the mirror. Shoppers could then take a photo and post it on Facebook to elicit feedback from their friends.

What type of store should your brand choose?

Understanding where your customers already are can help brands choose what type of store to set-up on Facebook. For large brands like Amazon or Levi’s that already have large traffic on their sites, adding a social element provides customers with a more personal shopping experience; shoppers learn what their friends like and buy and get valuable recommendations from them.

For smaller brands that don’t have a lot of users on their site, or for brands that are considering developing an E-Commerce site, then it makes more sense to bring their store to Facebook. Potential customers are already there and an On-Facebook store will help bring traffic and increase awareness of the brand without additional marketing efforts to direct consumers to their E-Commerce website.

Today Adobe unveiled the public beta of Muse (code name), software that enables graphic designers to design and publish professional, unique HTML websites without writing code or working within restrictive templates. Leveraging the latest Web standards including HTML5 and CSS3 where browser support exists, Muse combines precise design and creative freedom with innovative frameworks for adding navigation, widgets and HTML to include advanced interactivity on a site.

“The ability to build websites as easily as laying out a page in InDesign is one of the most popular requests from our design customers,” commented Lea Hickman, vice president of Design and Web product management at Adobe. “Those who have tested Muse are thrilled that something this intuitive yet powerful is now available.”

Plan, Design and Publish Unique and Interactive Websites

- Easy-to-use sitemaps, master pages, and a host of flexible, site-wide tools make it fast and intuitive to plan the website layout.
- Designers can combine imagery, graphics, and text with complete control, flexibility and power, similar to the functionality in Adobe InDesign. Muse provides drag and drop customizable widgets like navigation menus. Users can add fully customizable interactive elements including slideshows, Tooltips and remote rollovers.

- Muse embeds HTML code snippets from sources including Google Maps, YouTube and Facebook.

- Muse allows for the creation of Adobe-hosted trial sites for testing and review purposes. A site can be sent to clients, converted to a paid Adobe-hosted site or exported for FTP to other hosting providers.

Google has finally opened up the developer preview of the Chrome web store to India (and 14 more countries).

Starting today, when you upload an app via the developer dashboard, you’ll have the option of selecting from the following sixteen countries to list your app: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain, United Kingdom and the United States. If you are using Chrome Web Store Payments to charge for your app, you will also be able to set the app price for each country although if you’re not based in the United States you will not be able to complete your merchant account sign up just yet (this will be enabled soon).
It’s important to note that these apps will not yet be published to countries outside the United States. This will happen when the Chrome Web Store opens to consumers in these countries later this year. What you see is developer preview ahead of the consumer release so you have enough time to prepare your apps for international users.

Four new versions of web browsers have been launched this week:

IE9

Opera 11

Mozilla Firefox 4

Chrome 11 (beta)

These new innovations are good news for consumers (more choice/stiff competition/innovation), but for a web app developer this means long nights and depending on your target user segment, you will have to add the browser compatibility in the product roadmap.

So in essence your web app needs to support the following versions
IE: IE9, IE8, IE7 [and like it or not, but IE6 too!]
Firefox: 4.0, 3.6, 3.5, 3.0,
Chrome: 9.0, 8.0, 7.0, 6.0, 5.0, 10.0, 11.0
Opera: 11.0, 10
Safari 5 anyone?

With so many browser versions, how do you plan to handle compatibility? Or do you plan to focus on popular browser versions only (marked in the list above) and leave the latest ones to first penetrate the market?

Tell us which browser will you use for development testing purposes? We’d like to keep this as an open discussion and would like the community to share their take on browser versions.

PS: Most of the developers will ignore IE6, but do take a look at the browser stats for the Indian market (latest stats below). The market share is falling, but it still is number 3. Depending on the category of your web application, you will have to decide on IE6 support.

A particularly useful one that puts all your recent google docs in a neat gadget in the side-bar. This will provide quick links to your docs by saving you some precious clicks..

2) Google docs preview

Another interesting labs add-on that display a short preview of any google doc that has been shared with you by mail. Helps to decide if the matter requires urgent attention or can be put off untill later..

3) Message sneak peek

My favorite!! Simple and efficient!! Just right click on any message in your inbox to get a quick preview of the message. This works awesomely if you are expecting to read short emails without much effort.

4) Mouse gesture

Switching between emails is as effortless as moving your mouse, with this add-on. Just right click and move mouse left or right to go to previous or next email!!

5) Right side chat

If you do add calendars and such to your side-bar, it is bound to get cluttered. Move your chat gadget to the right side of the email list for a more visually pleasing and easy to use, uncluttered look. But know this, this will hide the google ads that show up on the right.

6) Superstars

Starring an email will never e the same again!!! This add-on will give you many interesting ways to mark your Gmail. Different coloured stars can be very helpful if you want to mark email specifically for later.

7) Undo send

Worried that you sent out an email before it was ready, or worse sent it to the wrong person?? Dont worry, it happens to the best of us, but not anymore!! Undo a sent email for upto 30secs after sending it!!

 Unread message icon

If most of your work is in your browser and you have to keep switching to your gmail tab to check for new emails, then get this add-on.It puts a gmail sign on the tab that the account is open and it displays a count of unread messages.

9) Inbox preview

Working on the internet on a slow connection can be a pain, and waiting for your inbox to load adds to it!! By enabling this add-on you will get a quick text only snapshot of your inbox while you wait for it to load, its just good sense to use your waiting time wisely.

10) Move icon column

Another simple and elegant addition to your Gmail inbox!! Simply moves the icon column from the right hand side to the left to make icons more noticeable.

Well these are only some of the best add-ons according to me. There are a bunch more of them available, just give them a try and choose for yourself. Suggestions for additions to the list are welcome.

Security of IT infrastructure is becoming a major concern for enterprise as well as consumers with the ever increasing threats that they face from botnets, worms, spammers, and fraudulent phishing emails. IBM published a report based on the study of global networks. Lets take a look at some of the India specific statistics that the report throws at us.

-India ranks amongst the top 5 countries for spam origination in 2010.

-When it comes to TLDs ( top level domains) used to host spam or malicious content. India made an entry into the top 5 list here too in September of 2010 and has remained there. The most notable stat in this category is the move of spam content hosted on .cn ( china ) domains to .ru ( russian ) domains.

- The top 5 countries of spam origination account for almost one-third of all the spam sent worldwide. India accounts for 8.2% of global spam. ( This does not necessarily mean that the nationality of the attacker is the same as the country of origin of spam, spam is sent mostly by use of bots, and those bots can be controlled remotely from any country.)

- If you look at the spam origins over time, India is the only country that has continuous growth in percentage of spam origins globally.

- A startling statistic that every user must sit up and take notice of is that India is the top country when it comes to origins of phishing emails and has a global share of 15.5%. Russia ranks second at 10.4%.

-India’s rise as the leading country of origin of phishing emails has been quite dramatic if you see statistics over the years. India accounted for less than 2% of phishing emails in 2008 globally, and two years on India is ranked number one globally for the same.

-Although the number of phishing emails originating in India is high, phishing URLs are mostly hosted in other countries. Not surprisingly, the main targets for phishing emails are financial institutions.

Of course, these spams are result of ‘Work From Home, Earn 20,000 INR/Month Ad‘ that we get to see on newspapers and several free classified websites.
